Discussion on adding tabs to the Catalogue to go beyond the locality info in Collection Events/Sites
Forum: Catalogue

Hi all,
This topic has come up in the Google Group emu-user-community (which has been active of late with UK and US people).

In archaeology and geology in particular, not so long ago when people collected things, they would only record the name of the site the object came from. After that, lat/longs or other information were recorded for the expedition as a whole, and that's reflected in the current design of the Collection Events module.

As technology has moved along, we can now record a set of coordinates that define the boundary of a site, and we can often pinpoint within the site where each object came from. This creates the need for precise location information per object. Has anybody done that yet?

Also, beyond the geospatial data collected, there are sets of data describing the environment in which the object was found (habitat, stratum) [it was recently pointed out to me that there can be whole datasets associated with this, including 3D modelling], and sometimes names that have been given to classify a particular part of the site, e.g. Structure 3, Burial Chamber 2, or Western Bank, near contact with Arunta Complex.

Should we add (has anyone added) tabs to the Catalogue to deal with this?

Another solution that occurs to me is a hierarchy of relationships in the Sites module. I've had a look and can't see one currently.

What do you all think?

Hi Robert,
It's taken a while for me to get back to this, but I really appreciate your post.

We have .obj files and the need to have a thumbnail for each. We also have .mtl files to render the surface. Do you have those? I was wondering whether the Supplementary tab in the Multimedia module would be the place for this kind of thing?
http://help.emu.axiell.com/v5.1/en/Topi … %20tab.htm

And we might need some fancy coding / API to render the image using multiple files.

When you say you created a MIME type in the registry, do you mean the Windows registry?

Hi Annie,
Thanks for your reply.

Design for me means creating our own forms, the way we create our own Crystal reports. I'm reading the documentation, but will probably need to ask for development work if background scripts need to be run. Thanks for the hint about nested tables.

I think it would be helpful to me if you could give a brief list of the kinds of forms you asked Axiell to create? Just to indicate how you are using Sapphire forms in your collection management processes?

Thanks again,

BP

Have you entered any Ancient Greek, Latin or other scripts?
Category: Using EMu

I've discovered that you can use Windows language packages that allow you to type in, say, modern Greek, but is there an efficient way to transcribe ancient text into our beautiful Unicode-compliant EMu without a) cutting and pasting or b) using a long code for each character?

First, who has Sapphire? Have you made some forms? Can we share our designs somewhere?

Requesting advice on how to change the current location of more than one holder simultaneously.

Hi Dave,
I can think of a global change workaround, but having the Relocate Tool for holders sounds like a sensible suggestion to me.

Hi Kara,
I might not be able to join you for the videoconference because it's 1am Friday the 21st Sydney time :) but I wish I could because I'm interested. I'll be going to an official Axiell 'roadshow' at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on Thursday the 27th, and I'd love to share ideas. There hasn't been much activity on this forum for a while, but I'm keen to correspond about what's happening in your EMu world. We're upgrading to 5.1 next week! and I have just been given an 18 month contract to continue the EMu 'project' here.
Please (everyone) feel free to chat on the forum or to contact me directly.

Hi all,
Could I please have a show of hands as to who has created 3D images of their objects, or would like to?

We have some, and at the moment, we have to get to them from EMu/IMu by adding a url as a record in the Multimedia Module, and linking to a website where they are rendered. They therefore show up in EMu as a url, not as a thumbnail of a 3D image. Axiell have no plans to add functionality so far.

Is this one of the instances where EMu isn't designed to perform the functions of a DAMS?

Do you have 3D images, or, in fact, other file formats that aren't covered yet? 3D printing anyone?

Interesting (if slightly old) news from Getty:
http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/voc … index.html

"As of June 1, 2016, individual licenses for use are not required for the Getty vocabulary data. The AAT, ULAN, and TGN are currently available in annual releases of XML and relational tables under Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-By) 1.0. Note that it is likely that these formats may be discontinued in the future. Users are encouraged to transition to LOD data releases.
An institution must acquire a logon in order to access the XML and Relational Tables data. With the logon, the data is also available via Web Services, where data is refreshed approximately every two weeks. See the data dictionaries and more information at the Download Center."

We're working towards upgrading to EMu 5.1 this year, which means we will have irn-based Thesaurus.
We intend to load AAT and TGN straight after that, and I'm going to ask for a quote to load LCSH as well.
Would love to hear from anyone with issues arising from irn-based Thesaurus or AAT or TGN, so we can test.

Hi Nancy, we are thinking of using AAT for object name, materials and techniques, Getty TGN for places, and Library of Congress Subject Headings for topic subjects. They all have initiatives for Australian terms. We'd like to use the APT for pictorial subjects but I'm not sure of its support status. Happy to hear any issues with these from anyone who has them in use. BP

Hi Katherine,

Yes! Can you email me? I'd love to talk to you about Herbarium data.

How do I delete a message that I've posted to one of the EMu Forum topics?

Causes confusion after every upgrade when users can't find their usual Tabs.

Hi Karen!!

This is a 'Me Too'. We would also like to be able to see search tabs and attachment tabs by default, instead of having to turn them on again and again.

Macquarie University Collections

Macquarie University is up and running with EMu. So far five of the University's object collections used for teaching, learning and research have EMu. They are:

Macquarie University Art Collection
Museum of Australian History
Museum of Ancient Cultures
Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies
Macquarie University Papyri

We hope to expand this to more of the University's collections soon, and we're looking forward to connecting with other institutions using EMu.

Please feel free to connect directly or via the Forum.

Hi Giselle,

Macquarie University will be ingesting (nom nom!) Thesauri some time next year once we've upgraded to EMu 5.0. We'd love to be involved in the special interest group and I will enquire about the funding contribution for coordination of Australian contribution to Getty.

Great to catch up at the conference. Looking forward to lots of interaction here on the forums.
