3D images? Other file formats?

3D images? Other file formats?

Hi all,
Could I please have a show of hands as to who has created 3D images of their objects, or would like to?

We have some, and at the moment, we have to get to them from EMu/IMu by adding a url as a record in the Multimedia Module, and linking to a website where they are rendered. They therefore show up in EMu as a url, not as a thumbnail of a 3D image. Axiell have no plans to add functionality so far.

Is this one of the instances where EMu isn't designed to perform the functions of a DAMS?

Do you have 3D images, or, in fact, other file formats that aren't covered yet? 3D printing anyone?

Re: 3D images? Other file formats?

We have a large number of 3d models we have created of the materials in our collections. I created a MIME type in the registry for our standard archive format (obj) and can directly upload those to the EMU database. I need a photo or render of the object for a thumbnail however. As long as your computer has a default "3d model viewer" associated with the extension (in our case that would be .obj) Emu will have the OS open the model in that application.

There IS a built in 3d model MIME type(model/iges and model/igs) you can use as a template in the registry. That's what I did. As we add other model types (like .stl) I'll just add new registry entries. The problem is creating the metadata to go along with each one. Haven't completely sorted that one out yet ;-)

Re: 3D images? Other file formats?

Hi Robert,
It's taken a while for me to get back to this, but I really appreciate your post.

We have .obj files and the need to have a thumbnail for each. We also have .mtl files to render the surface. Do you have those? I was wondering whether the Supplementary tab in the Multimedia module would be the place for this kind of thing?

And we might need some fancy coding / API to render the image using multiple files.

When you say you created a MIME type in the registry, do you mean the Windows registry?

Re: 3D images? Other file formats?

Barbara,
For a thumbnail we upload a separate image file. As far as the MTL file, we don't use them. All we are interested in is the geometry, not the surface data.

I think converting the MTL into a XMP metatada file might work. Maybe... We are still working on getting our metadata into one of the formats EMU natively understands.

I can say that the supplementary tab is the wrong place to put the MTL file. There is a possibility you can enter an additional item in the "documents" section on the documents tab. I haven't tried that yet since we don't keep mtl files.

As far as display is concerned, we install Meshlab (http://www.meshlab.net/#download) on all our computers and set that as the default viewer for obj files. That will render the file as correctly as it can. That works for us, but since we aren't using materials I can't say if it will work for you.

The registry I refer to is the EMU Registry. You will need to get your IT guy or the database Administrator to set that up.
