Add URL (s) in Multimedia by batch upload

Add URL (s) in Multimedia by batch upload

Hi,

I have 1,500 URL (links) that go to 1,500 digitized Field Museum publications that go to Biodiversity Heritage Library site. Example: http://BHL FM publicationwww.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/25585 was added to EMu via a CSV import. The link, (URL) was used in the Multimedia field and the filename (field) was automatically generated from the Multimedia (field name) in the Multimedia tab.

Because it was a URL and not a path to a JPG, the text of the URL was added, but it was not "enabled". By enabled I mean -- you see the URL icon in the Multimedia window, click on it, and you are taken to the website.

My time-consuming workaround is to copy the text URL; right click the mouse, opening the Add URL window, (or go up to the green cross and click ADD URL) and paste in the URL and save it.  The URL icon appears in the Multimedia window and it is "enabled" (clickable) and takes me to the digitized publication.

When an EMu user attaches the URL through "add URL" window in MultiMedia tab where does that URL actually "live" in EMu, does it have a field name? Or is the ADD URL a script that takes what it sees (the URL link) and lets the user go to the site
that's shown in the path  -- so the URL doesn't actually live anywhere in EMu?

Would there be a way to batch add a CSV with a column for the script or re-format the URLs, so that when they get imported to EMu it would automatically take the URL and make it "clickable"?

I've tried formatting the Multimedia differently to not include the http://www, didn't work.  I made a report that shows that the records that ARE enabled (clickable) have a path that refers to the local machine: C:\Users\ncummings.FM\AppData\Local\KESoftware\Cache/. The ones that are not yet enabled, have nothing in the Report's field.

If ADD URL is a script, would there be a way to pre-format the MultiMedia field so that EMu "knows" to make the URL "clickable"?

Would it be possible to somehow tell EMu when it sees "http://" to go to the (site and path)? If EMu can recognize JPGs and PDFs and display them, why can't it recognize "http://" and go to the site?

Here's the error message I got: error: record 1, line 2: error creating record for table "emultimedia" (Media file "http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/25585" does not exist)

Re: Add URL (s) in Multimedia by batch upload

Hello Nina,

A backend column named 'MulDocumentType' with the value 'U' is also required in the CSV file to be imported. This indicates to EMu that it is a URL.  The website will open up when you click the URL icon in the Multimedia window.  Please try this out and let us know the outcome.

Regards,
Gülhan

Re: Add URL (s) in Multimedia by batch upload

Greetings,

I'll try this -- and your reply makes *perfect* sense.

I'll post on the results of my test batch, and if it works, you may have saved me a zillion hours of clicking.

Re: Add URL (s) in Multimedia by batch upload

Good Morning,

I am very pleased to report that putting a "U" in the MulDocumentType field works like a charm! (I honestly don't have enough exclamation points to demonstrate how thrilled I am)

Many, many thanks,

Nina

Re: Add URL (s) in Multimedia by batch upload

I am having the same issue.  This CSV does not import.

MulDocumentType,Multimedia,MulTitle
U,http://zotero.org/users/4939919/items/KKSWS4TU,Zotero Record
We are using EMu 5.1
thanks
Bill

UPDATE: Header should be MulIdentifier, not Multimedia.
Thanks

Re: Add URL (s) in Multimedia by batch upload

Hi Bill,

As in your updated comment, the field to store the URL in is MulIdentifier.  Additionally, I recommend populating the MulMimeType and MulMimeFormat fields as well as per the following example:

MulDocumentType,MulIdentifier,MulTitle,MulMimeType,MulMimeFormat
U,http://zotero.org/users/4939919/items/KKSWS4TU,Zotero Record,x-url,application

Kind regards,
Gülhan
