Using KeEmu from a Laptop

Using KeEmu from a Laptop

Hello,
Does anyone utilise KeEmu on a laptop or netbook access the server either via a cable or secure WIFI connnection?
How do you find it? What are the issues, if any?
Our storerooms are located in very separate locations, as are our exhibition spaces. Unfortunately/fortunately our collections PC was moved out of the storeroom before I started in my role. However, I'm looking at this as an opportunity to streamline & expediate the processes here.

Therefore for ease of use instead of ordering a replacement Desktop PC for accessioning & exhibition managemment, I'm considering requesting a laptop to install/use the DB on, which is a more practical, efficient solution.

Look forward to hearing from anyone about this asap.

Re: Using KeEmu from a Laptop

Hello Lillian,

To run the EMu client, the only requirement for the Workstation is that it must run one of the following operating systems - Windows Vista, 2000, 2003, XP, Windows 7/8 and be connected to the network from which the EMu server can be accessed.   This is true for desktops and laptops.   The main thing you need to check is the strength of the WiFi or network access between the storeroom and the server.

Re: Using KeEmu from a Laptop

I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd share my experiences anyway.  Something to keep in mind is that EMu will disconnect (you'll get errors) when you move between wireless access points.  You will want to close EMu before moving between spaces, or sometimes even when moving within really large, say, exhibit or storage spaces that have multiple wireless access points.  This has been my experience at numerous institutions with different databases - you just get used to it.

Melissa,

Thanks for your helpful addition to this topic. I just happened across it right as I was looking at wifi considerations for a client.

How does EMu perform over wireless there? Have you noticed any specific tasks that take an unreasonably long time?

Thanks!

Will
