Duplicating EMu report records

Duplicating EMu report records

I have built complex crystal reports only to have one or two departments request minor (but important) changes for their own specific uses.  However, there is no way to duplicate an existing EMu report record. To make these tweaked reports I have to define a whole new report record (note: not an .rpt file) record, adding fields, grouping, essentially duplicating by hand the existing EMu report record. It seems like there should be some method of duplicating these report records but I haven't found one.

For complex reports with dozens of fields this can be quite a headache, is there anyway to duplicate a defined report in EMu? Would anyone else find this useful?  This functionality could also apply to defined Sorts, List Views and Shortcuts.

Re: Duplicating EMu report records

Hi Scott,

If I understand correctly, I think you can do what you want by creating a new report with some dummy values (e.g., just IRN) and then going to the Registry records for both reports, copying the data from the Value field of the Registry record for the original report and pasting it into the same field in the record for the new report.  When you next call up the new report you should see all the fields and groupings from the old report.  I've done this in the past though not recently, so I'd suggest you give it a try with a sample report first to make sure it really works!

Hi Scott,

If I understand correctly what you want to do, you could find the Registry setting for that report and ditto it (in the value field, be careful to remove the name of the Crystal Report file .rpt, towards the end of the value).
You should also be able to duplicate List Views and Sort that way.

Brilliant, thanks I'll test it out,. However, I still think that it would be quite helpful for users to be able to duplicate Sorts, List Views, Shortcuts, Groups and Reports from the dialog box without accessing the registry.

Re: Duplicating EMu report records

Hi there Scott,
I usually duplicate reports via the Registry when I want to make a new report based on an existing one, by copying the Reg entry then changing the .rpt file reference as suggested above by Christelle, then simply uploading a new copy of the existing .rpt file (renamed to match the new Registry entry) against the report.... however we did at one point have a new Admin Task added which was "Copy Report Definition"... do you not have that Admin Task available? This essentially does the same process for you but does not require manual registry editing. I don't use it but if you've got it, you might want to try it!
cheers

Re: Duplicating EMu report records

I don't think that Duplicate Report Definition is a standard admin task. Or at least, we don't have it at the NGA, and I don't remember seeing it the NMA when I worked there.

I think the idea of a button in the Properties page (for Reports, List Views, etc) would be really handy.
