Multimedia queries using dimensions

We are in the processes of identifying our smaller derivative jpgs and replacing them with larger versions or removing them altogether if they are too small to be useful but I've found that it is very difficult for users to run searches in the Multimedia module that find records that have a pixel height/width less than a certain value because stock configuration field type for Width, Height, Resolution and Color depth on the Characteristics tab in the Multimedia module is text. The same fields on the Resolutions tab are Integers which would allow the  queries but because those fields are a part of the derivative resolutions sub-table  the  query cannot be limited to only the 'master' image.  Currently we can only search for images less than a certain value by using text pattern matching queries.  For example, if a user wants to find all images with a height less than 800 pixels the query they have to run looks like this:

It seems like there should be an easier way to search for this information. Has anyone else had to work around this problem or be interested in developing a way to easily do  queries using dimensions of a multimedia object?
