A way to turn off Ditto All

A way to turn off Ditto All

No matter how hard we try we still find evidence of users dittoing and not checking all the tabs before saving. It would be really useful to be able to switch off Ditto All, so users can only paste data on the visible tab.

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

I will second this request WHOLEHEARTEDLY since I am one of the users who has on occasion inadvertently dittoed an entire record!

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

Hi there Mark,
You can control which fields are included in a Ditto paste using the "Skip" registry entries. We use this a lot, as there are some fields that we definitely do not want duplicated unless the user has deliberately intended. I realise it's a long time since you posted this and you probably already have resolved the problem!

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

Hi Karen

Yeah, definitely aware of Ditto Skip, and have employed this solution for lack of a better option. The thing is, sometimes users DO want/need to ditto certain fields, so switching them off is counter-productive. It's dittoing them when they don't mean to that is the problem, and that comes from using Ditto All and not checking the tabs before saving.  Removing Ditto All would solve this, as users could only ditto into fields on the visible tab.

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

I don't tend to have any complaints from users about just using the F9 key to do field-by-field ditto, in situations where an "All" paste is not wanted... do your users not like doing it field by field? Surely they don't have that many fields to fill in on one Tab!  :=D

cheers

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

If we could sweitch of Ditto All,  the field-by-field F9 would be sufficient. The problem is some of our users just use ditto all without thinking about what they're doing, despite plenty of requests not to. They don't know it's a problem until after it is done - sometimes days, weeks, months or even years later.

By disabling ditto all we can force them to think about it before they hit save. And that's what I'm hoping for with this wishlist entry.

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

Aha yes I see what you mean.... if you set Ditto Skip to skip ALL fields, the problem would then be that nobody could ditto anything, not even a single field.

I support the motion to be ablet allow/disallow the "Ditto All" function!

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

I agree about the need for an option to disallow the "Ditto All" function.  Ideally I'd like there to be two separate options:  Disallow "Ditto Current Tab" and disallow "Ditto All Fields."  The problem I've run into has to do with the fact that the keyboard shortcut for "Ditto Current Tab" is Shift+Control+F9 while "Ditto All" is the same sans the Control key.  If I inadvertently don't strike the Control key (or if I strike it but inadvertently ease up on it a moment before striking Shift) then I may be dittoing the entire record instead of just the current tab without even realizing it, as the Edit screen looks the same in either case.

Personally I would probably turn off "Ditto All Fields" for all users since I think it's something of a bad idea to be dittoing fields that are on tabs you can't currently see;  I'd much rather all users (myself included!) visit each of the tabs and ditto them one at a time, to make sure they really want to ditto the fields on that tab.

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

Hello All,

The next release of EMu has a new "Operations" privilege called daDittoAll.System Administrators may use this privilege to grant access to the Ditto All function. Any system build after the 3rd October 2011 contains the new privilege. The 4.0.04 upgrade script (upgrade-4-0-04) asks whether the daDittoAll privilege should be given to all users with daInsert/daEdit (that is users who can create or change records). This allows the current functionality (everyone can ditto all) to be maintained if required.

Regards

bern.

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

Good to hear, Bern!  If a user is not given the new privilege, will "Ditto Current Tab" still work for that user?  Or does the new privilege cover both "Current Tab" and "All Fields"?

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

The daDittoAll privilege only covers the Ditto All command. The Ditto Tab command is still available to all users (it is really just a shortcut for dittoing each field on the current tab, so it doesn't seem worth creating yet another privilege to handle Ditto Tab).

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

Makes sense.  The issue here was only with dittoing fields not currently visible on the screen.  We'll find this new privilege very useful.

Re: A way to turn off Ditto All

Hi Thomas - spot on re: the Control Key.   I actually pointed this out at a Canberra EMu User Group Meeting a year or two ago, and Alan Brooks suggested Ditto Tab might have been added after Ditto All, hence the simpler key combo to Ditto All.

Thankfully we won't have to worry about it after our next upgrade - HOORAY!  Thanks Bern.
