Multiple user groups in one Registry entry

Multiple user groups in one Registry entry

I have a dream wherein a user who is acting in a higher position can just have that higher user access added to his/her Registry entry (rather than completely changing their identity), then removed when they go back to their original position. My idea is that the higher access will "win".

For example:

User | fred | Group | Normal

changes jobs and now needs "AboveNormal" permissions for EMu... however, some of the permissions in "AboveNormal" do not allow the user to do some of their duties in "Normal".

So, my idea is that the one Registry entry could be appended with another user group, like this...

User | fred | Group | Normal;AboveNormal

Currently, they always need special access entries for their username so that they can continue some duties in EMu... but if they could just have all the possible user permissions listed under their one name entry, we wouldn't have to remember to create and then clear out all those extra entries.

A possibility?

Re: Multiple user groups in one Registry entry

Hi Karen,

I do believe that  a "multiple groups/user" feature is currently on the development radar.   Once you login you will be prompted with a box asking you to select which group you want to continue as.

I think this feature may be coming in 4.0.03 or perhaps .04 - please don't quote me on that :)

Thanks,

Warren.

Re: Multiple user groups in one Registry entry

Bern spoke on this "switch group at login" feature at the Australasian Conference in Brisbane. This is a step in the right direction, but they'd still only be able to access whatever shares (groups, sorts, lists, reports) are available to the current group they are connected as.

I've often wondered if a hierarchical group structure might work. A user could be a member of a group and a sub-group, with simultaneous access to shares for both levels.

For example, our Conservation department is broken down into sub-departments (Paper, Objects, Paintings, Tectiles, Mountcutting). I would like to see the ability for a user to be a member of Conservation group and Mountcutter sub-group. That way they could see shares for both the Conservation group as a whole AND for more targetted Mountcutter-only shares.

Similarly, Curatorial is further broken down into sections. It would awesome to have the ability to give access to either all Curatorial or to a targetted section.

You may wonder why we don't just train users to share with all Curator groups. But trust me, everyone is looking for shortcuts. As soon as they have to add more than a couple of names on the Security tab, they just choose Everyone.
