april_small.gif Very few carousels like this one remain in existence. Made in Germany by the Märklin toy company, it was sold in 1911 at Indianapolis’ Charles Mayer Department store, which was renowned for its world-class toy department. As the crank is turned by hand or motor and the music box plays, the top carousel turns clockwise and the bottom carousel counterclockwise. Arriving at The Children’s Museum in 1946, the carousel spent many years as a hands-on artifact, and thousands of children watched through the glass case as they turned the crank to operate the carousel themselves.
